Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Pick up for Kigali City tour and, transfer to Gisenyi

On your arrival at Kigali international airport, you will be picked up by our safari tour and travel driver/guide who will brief you about the safari and then after, depending on your arrival time, you will go for a Kigali city tour and visit interesting places around the city, visit places like the Kigali genocide memorial site in Gisozi, handicraft markets, cultural sites among many others if time allows. Have lunch en-route and then after you will be transferred to the northern part of Rwanda to Gesenyi. However, the drive is rewarding with remarkable scenery of the Virunga Mountains, with good views of Rwanda’s rolling mountains.  Finally arrive at Lake Kivu in the evening, you may decide to do beach activities like swimming or exploring the lake on a boat and view the neighboring islands and people’s farmland around the island or visit the hot springs.

Day 2: Transfer to DR. Congo Nyiragongo Hike

After breakfast at the lodge, you will be transferred to Rwanda/Congo border with a picturesque drive all through. After settling with the boarder authorities you will be driven to Kibatsi village where hiking commences. Later enjoy lunch within one of the restaurants around. Then after you will embark on the hiking of Nyiragongo up to the top with fantastic views as you ascend to the top. Dinner and an overnight at the top of the mountain.

Day 3: Descend and drive back to Volcanoes NP Rwanda.

After breakfast, descend the Volcano Mountain and drive back to the Congo/Rwanda border to volcanoes national park with a fantastic drive all through.  Arrive in time at the lodge for lunch, in the evening if you have time go for an optional cultural walk to the Iby’wachu community, enjoy their cultural dance and music, learning their weaving skills, cooking skills among many others. Day 4: Mountain Gorilla Tracking (volcanoes national park)

After breakfast, you will be driven to the park headquarters to receive short briefings by the park wardens/ senior ranger guide and also gets you allocated to the gorilla family in respect to client’s physical abilities. However, after briefing, the ranger guide will transfer you to the starting point to begin the search of our close cousins who shares almost 97% human genes.  This is a breathtaking experience on should not love to miss in the life time. Gorilla tracking time is unpredictable, the time to meet these giants depends on where they last seen the previous day, so a reasonable degree of fitness is needed.

It’s a breathtaking moment to sit among the gorillas listening to them grumble to each other, it’s an extraordinary feeling sitting in the forest knowing you are with a few of the last remaining mountain gorillas, it’s amazing that only 880 of these remaining creatures left. Upon spotting them one hour is allowed to stay with these animals while taking photography as well as imitating their calls. Then return to the point where your vehicle is stationed from here you will be transferred back to the lodge and later if the evening is free, go for a nature walk to Ruhondo and Burera (Optional)/ take a community walk to the near community of Banyarwanda. Day 5: Dian Fossey hike and transfer back to Kigali.

Have breakfast and then after, you will go for the hike up to Dian Fossey grave, in karisoke research center in the volcanoes national park. Dian Fossy was an American primatologist who dedicated her live conserving the lives of the mountain gorillas for over 18 years until she was killed and is buried there next to Digit, a mountain gorilla and many other gorillas died by diseases or sneers set to them by poachers.

Meanwhile, without her effort in conserving and habituating mountain gorillas, gorillas would be no more. The hike to the Dian Fossy is somehow tough as it involves passing through the forest and slopes, so some physical fitness is needed. You will receive more informative information from the care takers of the place, after on your return, you will be driven back to Kigali and later to the airport to meet your departure flight back home if scheduled on this day.
